Adrian Millar 1933 - 2018

Adrian was an Edinburgh-born son of a lithograph printmaker, his father sadly passed away when he was young forcing him to leave school and work from a young age with limited formal education. He worked in retail most of his life turning his natural artistic skills to use becoming a display manager within the House of Fraser group. Whilst working in this position, he created many large and spectacular window displays for several of the large department stores on Princes Street in Edinburgh.

In 1965, Adrian moved to Northumberland, taking a position as display manager at the new concept store Sheppards of Gateshead. He chose to stay in Northumberland and make it his family home even when this large store eventually closed. Adrian went on to manage various retail businesses with family by his side.

Everything Adrian did showcased his artistic flair. Turning his hand to architect's drawings, he designed numerous extensions, conversions, and two homes! He re-configured several shops, built a swimming pool, and painted murals. His spatial awareness, knowledge of materials, and skill for design was astounding for someone who was self-taught.

Adrian painted throughout his life in many different styles, experimenting throughout the journey of discovering his own way. Adrian’s work is extremely thought-provoking with his imagination very prominent throughout his work. Many of his themes are dark and questioning.

The majority of his catalogue is privately owned but some limited-edition prints are still available.
